Water Soluble Packaging 101

What is Water Soluble Paper?

SmartSolve water-soluble paper is an advanced paper technology that disperses quickly in water and is readily biodegradable, as per the international certification OECD 301B.

How is Water-Soluble Paper Made?
SmartSolve water-soluble paper is a bio-based material made from Forest Steward Council (FSC) sourced wood pulp fibers and a natural cellulose ingredient. Once the material comes in contact with water, the cellulose ingredient dissolves and the wood pulp fibers separate and remain. Micro-organisms and bacteria then help to break down the wood pulp fibers even further, allowing it to fully biodegrade.

What Claims Can I Make with SmartSolve Water-Soluble Materials?

ALL our materials are:

  • Zero Waste
  • Non-toxic to fish (US EPA Ecological Risk Assessment)
  • No PFAs, BPA, or Phalates
  • Biodegradeable (OECD 301B)
  • Flushable
  • No animal bi-products
  • REACH complaint
  • Recyclable

Environmentally Friendly Packaging for Label Converters:

Converting companies are stuck in the middle between the customer’s desire for environmentally friendly materials, pricing challenges with environmental materials, and of course, regulatory challenges (such as EPR). The topic of the day is circularity and recyclability, however, recycling stream contamination is a challenge both brands and converters must own.

SmartCo packaging brings to South Africa, a breakthrough label technology, with materials that can be washed off after use: these materials dissolve in any water temperature with minimal pressure or agitation. SmartSolve's “dissolvable” water-soluble pressure sensitive label technology is safe for the environment and ultimately biodegradable, per OECD 301B.

According to an independent laboratory, SmartSolve label technology has proven to improve the recyclability of PET plastics because the label washes off entirely during the recycling wash process, leaving behind a pure plastic granule.

Zero Waste. Zero Hassle.
